Germain-Robin - The
Finest Distilled Spirit In The World
This is what they claim.
Based on my own albeit limited experience, this could very well
be true.
The Germain-Robin story is
something to appreciate. A craftsman of the old school,
displaced from his work when his employer moves to modern
distilling methods and mass production, discovers an antique
still in an abandoned distillery, salvages it, and with the
help of a backer begins producing alambic brandies with an
innovative twist. He uses fine pinot noir table wine, rather
than the inferior wines that have traditionally been the
sources of brandy.
The result? An excellent
brandy, very flavorful, very smooth. So much so that I find the
taste of even such top line producers as Hennessey and Remy
Martin to be unsatisfactory in comparison.
Germain-Robin also produces a
rare brandy called Anno Domini, a limited annual release of
just over one barrel, blended from their finest aged brandies.
The components aree produced from world-class Pinot Noirs,
with a touch of old-vine Palomino, which is normally used in
the making of fine sherry. Rigorously selected for extended
aging, the brandy is brought to full maturity in air-dried
Limousin oak. This brandy is not cheap, selling for
neighborhood $350 a bottle. Some say it is equivalent to a
$5000 brandy. I wouldn't know. I have never tasted a $5000
brandy. But I HAVE tasted Anno Domini and it is far and away
the best brandy that has ever crossed these lips.
